What happened to November?

Mommy is really slacking these days, and my blog is waaay behind. So much has happened!

At the end of October... I found my feet. My MeMaw keeps telling me these stories about how my mom would suck on her feet for hours at a time when she was my age. I keep trying to tell MeMaw that I am a little more rotund than Mommy was, and it's harder for me to keep my feet in my mouth if I can even manage to get them all the way there.

Most of November was spent perfectioning things I could already do: holding up my head, rolling over (back to front, and front to back), pushing up with my legs, and "talking."

The Sunday before Thanksgiving, I went to my Grandma's house in Morehead. A year ago, this was the day that my parents found out I was on the way! Everyone was there: my great-grandparents, my grandparents, my great aunt and uncle, and my Mommy's cousins. Tatie and Tonton were there, too. Unfortunately, there was no food for me. :(

On Thanksgiving, I went to MeMaw and Big Daddy's. Finally, my Mommy gave me a little taste of Pumpkin Pie. I think I liked what I had, though Daddy and Mommy had to argue about whether or not it was a good idea to let me have regular food.

Daddy turned 31 on November 28.

On November 30, I held my bottle for the first time. This is something Mommy will never witness since she doesn't mess with bottles.

Finally, December 1, I had my four month appointment with Dr. Kuduk... even though I was almost 4 1/2 months old. I got some more vaccinations, but I hardly even cried. As my Daddy says, I am a big man! Here are my stats:

Weight: 19 lb, 13 oz
Height: 28"
Head: 16.75"

Bye bye, tummy time!

Today has been a great day! I went over to MeMaw's house while Mommy was at work. At some point, she laid me down on my belly in the crib and left me alone for a few minutes. I was in there screaming (as I tend to do during tummy time), and then all of the sudden, she heard me start squealing with joy. When she came back in, I had rolled over against the side of the crib and was staring up at her. That was my first time rolling over, and when MeMaw called Mommy to tell her, Mommy almost cried. However, Mommy said that my rolling over was kinda like a tree falling in the woods... if no one was there to see me, did it really happen?

Mommy had Trunk or Treat down at church tonight. She dressed up like a medieval maiden (a little girl asked her if she was the grim reaper) and passed out candy. I came down for a little while, but it was overcast and MeMaw didn't want me out in the cold.

After Daddy and Mommy took me home, they decided to give me the opportunity to turn over for real. After about 15-20 minutes of general fussing and getting my butt up in the air, I finally gave a big heave and made it over. At 14 weeks, 3 days, I can roll from my tummy to my back!

October 21 - Catching you up...

I hadn't written in almost a month, so I thought it was about time to catch you up with what's happening in my life!

I am growing and learning by leaps and bounds. Mommy and Daddy just can't get enough of watching me smile, coo, and squeal. I'm starting to laugh, though it's more like cackling. Now, when I'm on my stomach, it's a different story. I hate tummy time! However, I'm getting some good lift out of my arms and legs. Mommy swears that I will be turning over any day now. Of course, I show more promise turning over from back to stomach. Boy, if that comes before turning from stomach to back, I am gonna be one angry lil' man when I inflict tummy time on myself and can't escape!

I have been sleeping very well for the last 3+ weeks. Mommy doesn't even remember the last night that I woke her up for a 2am feeding. She reads about other mommies on babycenter or facebook who are struggling with babies older than me who aren't sleeping good. Yay me!

On Sunday, I went to Morehead to see my great-grandparents and my great-great aunt Margaret, who was up to visit from McKenzie, Alabama. Mommy said that maybe we could go down and visit her next summer. That would be great! She might take off all my clothes and let me chill in my diaper only since it gets so hot down there.

I've also started reaching for and even grabbing some things. I don't have a lot of coordination yet, but Mommy is hopeful. She's even started using some baby signs ('diaper' and 'milk'), even though there is no way I will be ready to use them for many months to come. She's so silly!

September 29 - Facing the firing squad

Today was my 2 month appointment with Dr. Kuduk. I should have known it was going to be a bad day. Mommy asked Daddy to check on me before he came to bed, and unbeknownst to her, he put a blanket on me... again. Mommy has told Daddy over and over again that I wear the sack so I don't need a blanket and that a blanket could smother me, but Daddy is more worried about my getting chilly than my dying from suffocation.

ANYWAY, about 5 this morning, I woke up and started screaming at the top of my lungs... not hollering, screaming. Mommy woke up and was confused because I never do that. She came in to find me kicking and screaming, completely covered from head to foot by the blanket. Who knows what happened? Mommy worries that a devil came in and covered me up. But boy, she gave it to Daddy when she got back to bed! It scared her to death to find me there like that, and she threatened to kill Daddy if he ever put a blanket on me again unless he was planning on being there right there with me.

Moving on... Mommy is apparently an idiot because she rushed me and Daddy out the door just to find out that our appointment was a full hour later than she thought it was.

Regardless, I was Mr. Charming. I slept in the waiting room, and when I got to the examination room, I was all smiles. I chatted up Daddy and Miss Tammy, the nurse. I weighed a whopping 16 lbs, 9 oz and was 26.5" long! My head circumference is 16.5"... so at least my brain is growing, too.

I loved seeing Dr. Kuduk. He talks to me and listens to me. I feel so special! He told Mommy and Daddy that I was doing great and completely off the charts in terms of growth. Maybe I'll grow up to play basketball... for the Cardinals, of course! I smiled, cooed, and squealed the entire time. Mommy thought she would burst with pride and happiness.

After Dr. Kuduk left, Miss Tammy returned to do the dirty work. First, I got an oral vaccination. That wasn't too bad until the end when I got a little choked. Then, I got three shots! It was terrible. There I was, minding my own business, smiling and cooing, when Daddy grabbed my leg and held it down. He knows I hate that! Then Mommy tried distracting me while Miss Tammy shoved a needle in my left leg. There was a brief period of realization and then I let out a huge wail! Then I got two more shots in my right leg.

I actually calmed down pretty quickly after that, though I've been a little fussy today since then. I do have a cool transformers band-aid and another spiderman band-aid to show for my pain and suffering...

Day 70 - September 27 - Le Petit Prince

So today I experienced my first Renaissance Festival in Harveysburg, Ohio. It was over 2 hours up and back, so Daddy was extremely nervous about how I would do. Guess what, folks? I did GREAT! Exactly as Mommy predicted I would.

We met Mr. Chris and Miss Sarah in Lexington. I got to ride in the backseat with Mommy and Miss Sarah. I slept quite a bit, and when I was awake, I was a cutie! When I got a little fussy, Mommy and Daddy had the foresight to bring a pacifier. Normally, I don't get one; but on a trip like this, there's really very little my parents can do to calm me down should I get riled up.

It was pretty cold, so we stopped at a Meyer to pick up some jackets for Mr. Chris and Miss Sarah and some little socks for me. When we got there, I stayed in the car with Mommy for a little while to eat, but when Daddy got me out, he was fit to be tied about the weather. They found a blanket and wrapped me up before putting me into the Jeep carrier. I fell right asleep as soon as I got comfy.

We did some fun stuff there: walked around and laughed at some of the ridiculous costumes, saw the Mudde Show, watched the joust (kinda), and dreamed about the day I would be old enough to play the midway games and spend all Mommy and Daddy's money! Next year, I need a costume for sure!

On the way home, we stopped at the Cheesecake factory, where I was once again fantastically behaved. Even Daddy had to admit that I was pretty good...

Day 67 - September 24 - Rub-a-dub-dub, two men in a tub!

Today I took a shower with Daddy. He and Mommy were taking me down to MaMaw Della's for breakfast, but I was - as Tatie would say - a "greasy beezie." Daddy thought it would be fun to hold me under the shower spray and see if I liked it or not. With Mommy's help, he washed my hair and body and held me under the shower head. I'm not sure if I really liked it. I did a lot of gasping and breath-holding, as is my fashion. I really don't like water being splashed in my face when I'm in the sink let alone when it's gushing all around me.

That said, I don't think that's the last I will see of the shower...

Day 61 - September 18 - First night at my grandparents'!

Tonight, I spent the night at MeMaw and Big Daddy's. They have been asking me to spend the night for about a week... at least since they got the crib set up! Of course, they add on that they want Mommy to stay too, but I know that if it were up to them, we'd be in the basement playing until all hours of the night without her. :)

Mommy and Daddy went to a play tonight to see Tatie, and MeMaw and Big Daddy babysat. Then, when Mommy and Daddy got home, they just spent the night. You see, Mommy will be watching the Louisville v. UK game here at my grandparents' and Daddy is actually going to the game with Poppy. Since I'm staying with Mommy, I am happy to report that I get to wear my Louisville clothes tomorrow!

MeMaw and Big Daddy wanted me down in the crib, but Mommy and Daddy kept me in the pack-n-play up in Mommy's old room. It wasn't nearly as comfy as my crib... and I couldn't enjoy the mobile! That is my favorite thing! BUT I guess Mommy and Daddy were happy to have me back in their room with them after I spent last night in my own room.

Day 60 - September 17 - First Night in Big Boy bed

MeMaw and Big Daddy have been criticizing Mommy and Daddy for over a week on the fact that I'm almost 15 lbs and still sleep in the bassinet. Sure, it's a little cramped in there, but Mommy and Daddy love to have me close by where they can keep an eye (and ear!) on me. However, I've gotten to sleep at the crib at MeMaw's, and my parents can't deny that I sleep good when they let me nap in their big bed.

So, tonight, I slept in the big boy bed and did just fine!

Day 57 - September 14 - Mommy goes back to work

Today was a very sad day for Mommy. She had to go back to work. She wasn't dreading going to work so much as she was unhappy to leave me, but I didn't seem to notice. I actually had my first bottle yesterday and took it just fine. Mommy let Daddy feed me... partially so he could get the hang of it, and partially so she wasn't distracting me otherwise. Even though she was worried that I might reject it, I had no problems. Put food in front of me, and I will eat!

Since we had never done this before, we were a little behind all morning. Mommy was about half an hour late to work! She fed me and dressed me, loaded me up in the Lincoln, and drove me to MeMaw and Big Daddy's house. Big Daddy was working in Georgia that day, so it was just MeMaw to welcome me. She was so excited! She didn't have the nursery completely set up yet, but it was still comfy cozy for me.

Mommy had thought she would be fine with leaving me behind, but as she drove away, there were tears in her eyes. I'm turning her into a softie. :)

While I was at MeMaw's house, I kept a little journal for Mommy to keep in her scrapbook... should she ever take the time to work on it again. It was an uneventful day for the most part, though MeMaw did take me on two walks. I can't say I was as happy to see Mommy when she got home as she was to see me, either!

Day 48 - September 5 - We're going to the country

So, after my relatively painfree trip to Louisville, it would be too much to expect to make it to Aunt Sue's. This is the annual Labor Day picnic, held the Saturday before Labor Day, for my Poppy's family. MaMaw Della, her sisters, and their children/grandchildren/great-grandchildren get together way out in the country to potluck and hang out. This is one of Mommy's favorite events because it is one that she's gone to every year that she and Daddy have been together... and usually there is pretty good food!

Of course, I needed to eat at the last minute, so they didn't get off until later... and luckily Aunt SheShe called to warn Daddy of a wreck on Ironworks Road that had traffic backed up. We took a more scenic route to Aunt Sue's and I slept most of the way.

When we got there, I was a star attraction. I met many of my relatives on this side for the first time: Aunt Sue, Aunt Charlotte, Aunt Joyce, my cousin Jane... and then I got to see Poppy, Aunt Leslie, Aunt SheShe, and Abigail, too. Uncle Eddie and Aunt Camille were there, as well. Unfortunately, I had a diaper early on (almost immediately upon arrival) and then I was hungry later on, so I spent a good bit of time in the car.

What a busy weekend!

Day 47 - September 4 - Road Trip!!!

Today was my first official road trip! Sure, I've been to Lexington, Morehead, and Nicholasville already, but now I was going to Louisville and I was going to spend the night! Mommy and Daddy were both wondering how I was going to hold up, especially now that I've started getting cranky more and more often.

This morning, Mommy tested fate by taking me to Lexington with her to go to the fabric store and to see Tatie Monique at work. Tatie has been sick the past few days, and I haven't gotten to see her. She was so happy to see us walk through the door!

So after spending the morning in Lexington, I got to get ready to go to Louisville... it was a little crazy. Mom had to shower and go to Walmart to pick up a gift for my cousin Lauren who is getting married on Monday (and the reason we went to Louisville in the first place). MeMaw stayed with me while she was busy. Then Daddy got home from school, and they had to pack, so MeMaw gave me a bath and put me in my road trip outfit... it had dinosaurs on it! Unfortunately, though, I am growing so fast that my clothes are rapidly becoming too small. Mom couldn't resist putting me in this outfit at least for a little while.

We got on the road about 4PM, and I was out like a light and slept all the way there. When we got there, I ate and went back to sleep in time for all the guests to show up. I got to see several people again... My Mimi, PaPaw Jack, Aunt Becky, and Whitney. Gammy was there, too. Then I got to meet many more: my cousin Bonnie, my uncle Steve, my cousins Susan, Jane, Debbie, and their spouses, Lauren, Brandon, Evan, Caroline... it was fantastic! And I slept through almost the entire thing! After Daddy was so worried about my pitching a fit, I don't even think I woke up.

I slept in the bassinet, so it was just like being at home. I even woke up once overnight. But I was almost perfect... and I slept almost the entire way home, too!

Day 40 - August 28 - Tubby Time!

Mommy and Daddy got out the tub today rather than giving me a sponge bath. I like the tub!

Day 39 - August 27, 2009 - A visit to Aunt Teresa

Today, I went to the end of the world and back... otherwise known as my Aunt Teresa's. Me, Daddy, Mommy, and MaMaw Della loaded up for a trip out to Nicholasville and beyond to see her new home. Well, it's not entirely new, but she did add on a huge, beautiful addition that Mommy and Daddy had yet to see.

To entice them to come even more, Aunt Teresa made a huge meal including fried pork chops and macaroni and cheese... more food I am looking forward to eating one day! Like my trip to Morehead, I couldn't shake a certain crankiness. I made it all the way to Aunt Teresa's just fine... Mommy sat in the back with me, and I slept the whole way. But as soon as we pulled up in the driveway, I started feeling bad. I felt so bad, that the first thing I did once we got into Aunt Teresa's was to throw up on MaMaw Della. Mommy and Daddy were embarrassed, but both MaMaw and Aunt Teresa are very patient with me. They even took turns holding me so Mommy and Daddy could eat.

We hung out for a while, and I got to see Miss Muffin and her kittens. I'm not quite sure if I really notice any animals yet, but I am smiling at people now.

But once it was time to go, I got anxious and angry again. I think I cried off and on all the way home! Mommy and Daddy pulled into the parking lot at Woodhill Shopping Center to change my diaper, thinking that would help, but no. Mommy let me suck on her finger for a while... maybe I'm ready for limited usage of a pacifier?

Regardless, I'm sure MaMaw was very glad to get out of the car once we made it back to Winchester!

Day 31 - August 19, 2009 - I am one month old!

Today is my one month birthday! Happy birthday to me!

I went to Dr Kuduk yesterday to check back in on my little wang... all's good, thank goodness! Mommy and Daddy were driving me nuts looking at my private parts every time I turned around. I now weigh a whopping 12lb, 8 oz. I am 23.5 inches long, and my head circumference i 15.75". That brain is just a growin'!

Tatie came by and took some 1 month pictures of me, too. Can you see that I have grown?

Day 28 - August 16, 2009 - My first haircut

When I was born, I was born with a full head of hair. It's gradually been falling out, little by little, though I still have a good bit left. Meanwhile, it has apparently been growing in the back... and down my back... into a cute little mullet. This has been bothering Tatie and Daddy for quite some time, so they took matters into their own hands and gave me a hair cut today. It wasn't very much, but Mommy stuck some in my memory book and some in an envelope to keep. I don't know what she is going to do with that... maybe keep it on the shelf next to the shriveled up remainder of my umbilical cord. Silly Mommy!

Day 26 - August 14, 2009 - A return visit to Dr Kuduk

As you know, I had my special day a little over a week ago. The Plastibel device fell off Saturday night/Sunday morning, which freaked Mommy and Daddy out since it was supposed to stay on 5-8 days... and that would have been Monday at the earliest. They even called the hospital, who called Dr. Andreas at 1 AM to check and see if I was okay.

Anyway, it kept looking redder and redder, and both Mom and Dad were quite upset about the appearance of things - after all, I'm the first little boy Mommy has ever seen, and well, Daddy, he doesn't remember much about when all this happened to him. Finally, yesterday evening, my little wang got stuck to my diaper a little and I bled. That was the last straw for Daddy, and we made an appointment to come in and have everything looked at.

Needless to say, I wasn't to happy to see Dr Kuduk again, and I let him know it! I peed and peed and peed on him when he came in to look. However, once things calmed down and he was able to take a peek, he said everything looked fine to him, but to come back in early next week. I have an appointment for Tuesday.

Meanwhile, I weighed in at a heafty 12 lbs!

Day 23 - August 11, 2009 - Morehead, here I come!

Today, I took my first trip to Grandma and Grandpa's! They are my great-grandparents, and I am their first great-grandchild. It was Grandma's birthday (which Mommy almost forgot), so I brought her a framed picture of me (of course!) and a card. I didn't even know they made great-grandma cards, but I found the perfect one.

When we got there, Grandma had made Mom's favorite... chicken and dumplins! Unfortunately, I am too small for them. Hopefully, I will be ready to get some next summer. She also served tomatoes, green beans, and cornbread. For dessert, there was zucchini cake... I may pass on that, but Mom sure seemed to like it!

I was in a not-so-good mood for whatever reason. Maybe it was the travel? Mom still wanted to take me down to the campus bookstore with everyone rather than wait at the house for Daddy to get back. It's about time for him to go back to school, so Grandma and Grandpa wanted to take him to get his books. Even with the discount and buying almost all used, they still spent almost $600 for just one semester! Daddy and Mommy are so thankful to them, I'm sure. I also got a Morehead State Eagles onesie and a hoodie for this fall. I'm looking forward to shopping next year, because there are a lot of cute clothes for when I am a little bit older.

When we got back to the house, everyone had a bowl of ice cream. Apparently, this is what they do in Morehead. MeMaw had even called Grandma to tell her to watch Grandpa... he has a history of giving ice cream to babies. Drat, MeMaw... this was my chance!

Day 19 - August 7 - Girls' Night

Tonight, I went to Tatie's house for the first time. She was having a girls' night in, and Mommy was invited. Of course, this made Big Daddy sad, as he didn't get a chance to see me today, but I know that I will get to see him tomorrow.

Daddy was a little nervous about leaving me over there. He went and hung out with Tonton, but not until he had made sure that I had everything I needed. He set up a little changing area upstairs on the bed in Tatie's guest room and even made a special trip back to the house to get my boppy chair so I didn't have to sit in my carseat.

Tatie had four of her friends over: AnnE, Nancy, Jess, and Christy... but I was the star of the party. Mommy was worried that they would think she was a bad mommy, letting everyone wool me and hold me while she sat there and ate, but I think no one really minded.

I ended up peeing on Tatie's bed upstairs... she didn't mind.

Mostly, I was well behaved. I got a little fussy with Mommy during the movie, but then Miss Nancy took me and bounced me around. I calmed down immediately.

When Daddy showed up, I was sitting in Miss Nancy's lap. Daddy looked in the boppy chair, I wasn't there, and then (panicked) asked, "where's the baby?" Daddy is so funny!

Day 17 - August 5 - My Special Day

Today was my "special day," as Daddy would say.

When I chowed down at 3:15 this morning, little did I know that would be my last meal until after 9!

Mommy and Daddy got up really early this morning and woke me up to go to Clark Regional, where I was born. By the time I got there, I was in rare form. Daddy was tore up... because I was crying over being hungry and because he felt sorry for me because of what was getting ready to happen. In fact, Daddy has been sad and nervous for the past several days in anticipation of my surgery.

After Daddy got me checked in, Mommy, Daddy, MeMaw, and I went up to the second floor for outpatient services. They put a little band around my ankle with my name on it, and then they assigned me to a room. Daddy, Mommy, and I spent a few minutes in there, Daddy consoling me over being hungry.

When the nurse came in, Daddy went to the waiting room with MeMaw, and Mommy and I were left alone with the nurse and Dr. Kuduk. They strapped me to a little board, and Dr. Kuduk gave me some anesthesia. The nurse let me suck on a swab soaked in sugar water, which made me feel a little better. I was so hungry! Then Dr. Kuduk swabbed me down with Iodine and began the procedure. I bawled the entire time. Mommy was right there beside me, trying to talk to me and let me know she was there, but I would not calm down. Mommy thought this was a little extreme... I had been so good with the being strapped to the board AND the shots. I guess she thought that I just got tired of being restrained. However, when all was said and done, Dr. Kuduk looked at her and said, "Well, I don't think the anesthesia took as well as I would have liked." Mommy was horrified! I had been screaming in pain!

As soon as Dr. Kuduk left the room, Mommy nursed me and I calmed down. Good thing that I had plenty of time to relax before Daddy came back in the room. He would NOT have done as well as Mommy keeping his cool.

Now that I'm back home, I've been taking some baby tylenol for pain and taking it easy in general. Mommy and Daddy are letting me do whatever I want today. Good thing I won't remember any of this.

Day 15 - August 3 - A day in Lexington

Today was a very busy day! Mommy and Daddy got me up very early to eat and take a bath in preparation for my 2-week visit to Dr. Kuduk. They were a little nervous about my statistics, but I proved that they had nothing to worry about. I weighed in at a whopping 10 lbs 8 oz, and I was 22.5" in length. That means that I have gained almost a pound since I was born. I had gained 1 lb., 3 oz. since my last office visit! Apparently, Mommy and I are doing well in the feeding department.

Following my doctor's visit, Mommy and Daddy took me on their first trip to Lexington. I am, after all, 2 weeks and 1 day old today. Mommy tried to tank me up before leaving, but I was still full from my pre-doctor feeding and refused to eat. This was the beginning of the end.

First, we visited their doula, Miss Deb, to return some books on childbirth that they had borrowed. Mommy and Daddy were so ready to show off how big and beautiful I am. :)

Then, they had hoped to visit Tatie Monique where Daddy was going to get his hair cut and Mommy was going to get her eyebrows done, but Tatie had an appointment and Mommy and Daddy had to waste an hour and a half in Lexington. So, they went to Graeter's and had ice cream.

While they were there, Big Daddy called, and when he heard that I was in Lexington, he asked Mommy and Daddy if they would come to Lexmark. They agreed, but only to visit Big Daddy in Building 32. Mommy has to come back another day when she has more time to visit her friends in Building 002.

I had a poo, so Daddy changed my diaper on a picnic table outside Big Daddy's office. I'm sure everyone who had a window out onto the parking lot enjoyed their view of my changing.

Then, Big Daddy left his meeting to show me off to anyone on his hall who was in their office. He was obviously so happy to have me there.

Unfortunately, I didn't get to spend a lot of time with Big Daddy because he was busy and Mommy and Daddy had to get back to Tatie's. They got on New Circle Road in Lexington to drive to Richmond Road where Tatie works, and I officially expired. I started to get fussy because I was finally hungry at 3PM... 6 hours since my last feeding. At the intersection of Broadway and New Circle, Mommy played Chinese Firedrill to get in the backseat and try to calm me down, but there was no pacifying me. Daddy was a wreck all the way to Tatie's because I screamed and cried non-stop. I was inconsolable. Mommy did a great job keeping her cool, but as Daddy got out of the car, he told Mommy that he was about ready to throw up and that they were never doing this again!

Mommy fed me and changed me in the Lincoln while Daddy got his hair done and calmed down. Then, I got to go inside with Mommy so that everyone at Hair and Now could tell me how beautiful I was. :) Tatie was so happy to see me, too.

After crying myself silly on the way there, I then slept the entire way home. What a crazy day!

Day 12 - July 31 - My umbilical cord falls off!

Last night before I went to the cookout, Mommy and Daddy noticed that my umbilical cord was hanging on by a thread. Daddy tried to convince Mommy that they should cut it off with a pair of scissors, but Mommy refused (thank goodness!) because Dr. Kuduk said they shouldn't touch it.

However, this morning, it fell right off! Mommy was so excited. She's set it up on the shelf in the nursery because she doesn't know exactly what she wants to do with it yet. I wonder if she'll put it in an envelope and keep it in my baby book?

Day 11 - July 30 - My first cookout

Last night, I slept 6 hours in a row! Unbelievable! Mommy woke up at 6AM all in a panic wondering what had happened to me.

Today was also my first cookout at Aunt Karen and Uncle Vernon's. We were celebrating Tonton's birthday. Too bad I didn't get any hamburgers or hotdogs.

Day 9 - July 27 - Giving gifts to Daddy

More on the poo saga...

I have been eating very well the past few days and that is evident by the copious amount of diapers that I go through. This morning, Mommy was holding me, and she heard some gas escape. She handed me over to Daddy, who went into the other room to check my diaper. (Daddy is the official diaper-changer in the family.)

I only had a drop of poo, but since I had some pee, Daddy went ahead and started changing me. While he was cleaning me off, I had another little spurt of poo into the wipe. Daddy pulled the wipe away, but Mommy warned him that I might go off again. No sooner had Daddy put the wipe back next to my bottom but I exploded poo all into his hand.

At least I didn't spew all over the furniture, like I did for Mommy last week. :)

From Asher's Blog
Today was also my first day outside. Mommy took the quilt my Aunt Karen gave me and spread it out in the backyard under the big tree. Daddy was worried that it was too hot and too sunny for me... after all, it would have been too hot and too sunny for him! However, she hopes that the sun will do me some good as far as getting on a daytime-nitetime schedule.

Day 7 - July 26 - Holding my head up!

Today, I am one week old! To celebrate, I went to MeMaw and Big Daddy's again for dinner, but I didn't get any swiss steak or mashed potatoes, unless you count the fact that I got them indirectly through Mommy a couple of hours later.

My big developmental moment is that I held my head way up today on my own... both for Big Daddy and for Daddy. Everyone says that I am strong and brilliant, and I'm trying to keep it from going directly to my head. Also, I was laying on the couch with Big Daddy, and I was able to turn over onto my side. I haven't quite been able to do it since, but that doesn't keep me from trying.

Day 5 - Friday, July 24 - First visit to MeMaw & Big Daddy's

On Friday, I had to go to the doctor again. This meant another bath. Daddy gave me this one while Mommy got ready to leave... this was a little traumatic for me, but I felt so good and clean afterwards, I forgave Daddy.

Dr. Kuduk was really pleased with my progress. (1) I had gained 4 whole ounces and was now up to 9 lb 5 oz. I should only be gaining 1 oz/day, so I had gained twice the average. Go Mommy! (2) I have grown and should be able to be circumcised in a couple of weeks. As long as we do it before I'm one month old, I should only need local anethesia.

Friday was also the day that I had my first official visit(s). First, we had dinner at my MaMaw Della's house. MaMaw lives right down the road from us, so we didn't have very far to go at all. I ate before we left, but Mommy and Daddy had salmon patties, corn on the cob, tomatoes, mashed potatoes, and rolls. I am looking forward to being able to eat MaMaw's homecooking sometime soon!

After MaMaw's, Mommy and Daddy decided to go visit MeMaw and Big Daddy, too. I had not seen Big Daddy in a couple of days, and Mommy assumed he was going through withdrawal.

Day 3 - Wednesday, July 22, 2009 - Doctors and Diapers

Today I had my first trip to my pediatrician, Dr. Kuduk. Before I went, though, I had to have my first sponge bath. MeMaw was there to tell Mommy exactly what to do, so I wasn't too badly scared.
From Asher's Blog

I had already met Dr. Kuduk twice in the nursery at the hospital, but it was nice to be able to get out of the house for a little while. I was on very good behavior and had gained an ounce. I had lost 9 oz in the hospital, but after just one day at home with Mommy and Daddy, I was back up to 9 lb 1 oz. I also got to wear a cute outfit that my Aunt SheShe got for me.

After examining my nether regions, Dr. Kuduk casually asked if I had sprayed Mommy or Daddy yet while being changed. They said 'no', 'cause up until then, I had been on very good diaper behavior. As soon as Dr. Kuduk left the examining room, however, I had a poo. When Daddy went to change my diaper, I sprayed pee everywhere. It got all over the paper on the table and went under my back. Mommy tried to block the spray with her hand, but then she could do nothing but laugh. It took them a while to get me situated. Thank goodness for the change of clothes in Mommy's diaper bag!

Later that night, I had another diaper incident. Mommy was sitting on the sofa with me on the boppy pillow next to her. She heard this wet blow-out come from the direction of my bottom, and when she looked down, I had pooped out the side of my diaper, all over the boppy pillow, and down in between two cracks of the sofa. Daddy was having a heart attack about the sofa. Tatie Monique was there, and she took care of me while Mommy threw everything she could in the washing machine and Daddy tried to clean off the sofa cushions. Luckily for them, they have that microsuade stuff on the couch which is completely stain-proof and my poo came right off.
However, Daddy thought he was doing the right thing by cleaning my poo off in the kitchen sink because he didn't want to get poo in the washing machine. Mommy went ballistic over the poo in the kitchen sink because that's where she cooks food. Since then, I think she's been rinsing my poo in the toilet where it belongs.

Day 2 - Tuesday, July 21 - Going Home!

I was named Tuesday morning at 6:00 a.m., almost 48-hours after my birth. The nurse came in with the paperwork for my birth certificate, and although she told Mommy and Daddy that they did not have to name me before leaving the hospital, that is kinda what they had promised the other members of the family. With a big breath, they named me Asher Watson Caudill. I like it!

On Tuesday, Mommy and I were cleared to leave the hospital! I was not badly jaundiced, and Dr. Kuduk said everything was looking good. Unfortunately, he wanted to wait to circumcise me, so I will have to go back in a few weeks for outpatient surgery. At least I don't have any idea what's going to happen! :)

Dr. Pascuzzi released Mommy, who didn't need the wheelchair and walked out of the hospital on her own. Go Mommy!

Tatie Monique had decorated my new home. There was a sign in the front yard announcing my birth (without a name of course) and balloons on the mailbox. Tatie was very happy to write my name on the sign... finally!

Although I have a beautiful nursery, Mommy and Daddy set up a bassinet in their bedroom so they didn't have to be separated from me. Although they were tired from rooming in with me at the hospital, I think they secretly enjoyed having me that close. :)

I also had my first tummy time with Daddy that evening. I really liked laying on his chest and listening to him snore.

Day 1 - Monday, July 20

The following day, I still was "Baby Boy Caudill." Mommy and Daddy were together considering Parker and Asher. Daddy was still thinking about Gabriel, and Mommy had thrown Boaz into the mix. Asher was actually a pretty late entry, coming in the week before or so because Mommy ran across it on a biblical names site. She liked that it meant "happy" or "blessed" --- that is exactly how she felt when she thought about me! However, after my precipitous delivery, she thought that she might prefer a name that meant "quick." On his iPhone, Tonton found Boaz meant "swiftness," and Mommy thought that she could call me "Bo" for short, since Beau was on their original name list. However, Daddy thought Boaz was too weird. Everyone was getting impatient calling me Peanut for sure.

Mommy and I spent most of the day trying to get in the swing of things with nursing. I had some good sessions and some bad sessions, to be sure.

I also had two portrait sessions. One with the hospital photographer, and one with my cousin Whitney. I can't post the one from the photographer, as it is copyrighted, but I can post a similar one that my Mommy made that's not nearly as good. I will also post a couple from Whitney...

My Birth Story

At our 39-week appointment, Dr. Pascuzzi informed my parents that, although he respected their wishes for a natural childbirth, he did not feel comfortable allowing the pregnancy to continue beyond 41 weeks. With apprehension, they agreed to an induction on July 27.

They decided to begin natural induction techniques the weekend of my due date. On July 18, they walked in the morning, they walked in the evening, and they pulled weeds in our front yard. Mommy drank two cups of Raspberry Leaf tea and began using Evening Primrose Oil. Tatie Monique and Mommy played Mario Kart until 11:30; and after she left, Mommy went to bed.

At 1 a.m., Mommy got up to use the bathroom, and when she lay back down, she had her first contraction. She had been worried that she wouldn’t recognize a true contraction when it came, but there was no mistaking it. She smiled to herself with a little excitement and settled back into the bed to try to fall back asleep.

Before she was able to fall asleep, however, she had another contraction. She thought that it was strange to have another contraction so soon, so she tried again to get some rest. At that point, they had to be coming every five minutes or so; so she got up and went to the kitchen to prepare a bowl of cereal and drink a glass of milk. She didn’t want to go walking at midnight, so she opted next to try the shower. Nothing provided any relief, so she finally went back to the bedroom to wake Daddy up about 1:45. She nudged him and said, “I think we are go,” but he barely moved. She nudged him a little harder, and he told her to go back to sleep. If they really were in labor, he reasoned, it would be a long day ahead of them. She told him that they were coming too fast for her to rest.

Daddy reluctantly got up. Mommy lay down in the side relaxation position and tried unsuccessfully to get comfortable. Daddy tried to keep her calm, got her water, and sat on the bed with her; but he did not begin timing her contractions.

After forty-five minutes or so, Mommy went to the bathroom, and her mucous plug came out. Mommy told Daddy to call Miss Deb, but he argued that it wasn’t really Mommy's mucous plug. He was in denial about what was really happening. Mommy got online and looked up pictures of mucous plugs to confirm what had happened; and She even left the mucous plug on the sink in case someone needed to see it later. Daddy finally called Miss Deb at 2:45.

Daddy told Miss Deb that the mucous plug had come out but there was no bloody show. Miss Deb thought this sounded promising and suggested some things to do to keep Mommy comfortable. Daddy also began timing contractions. As they started timing contractions, Daddy told Mommy that we must be doing something wrong. The contractions were lasting about a minute and coming every three minutes or less.

Daddy got Mommy out of bed to try to slow the labor, so they danced and Mommy labored on the birthing ball. Daddy drew a bath for her, and she lay down in the tub hoping to find some relief. It felt good to immerse herself almost completely into the water, with just her face above. She was so thirsty that she turned her head to the side and drank the bathwater… she didn’t even care at that point.

However, all Mommy wanted to do was be in bed. At the next bathroom visit, she noticed bloody show. By this point, she was in complete misery and almost unable to relax.

The contractions were coming very quickly. Mommy made Daddy call Miss Deb back. She was asking him questions about Mommy's labor, and rather than answer, he would then relay the question to her. Mommy vaguely remembers him asking about her contractions and her snapping, “I’m having one NOW.”

Around that time, Daddy told Miss Deb that there must be something wrong because my last contraction was a minute and forty seconds long and less than 3 minutes apart. It seemed as though she would have a strong contraction and then a weaker contraction. She was unable to relax at this point: she tried to avoid crying out by clapping her hands. The pain was unbearable, and she told Daddy she couldn’t do it any more.

Shortly thereafter, the contractions stopped, and Mommy was able to get out of bed. She went to the bathroom, got something to drink, and rested. Time seemed to stand still. Suddenly, waves of an indescribable sensation began to come over her body. As these contractions began to peak, Mommy felt an overwhelming urge to go to the bathroom. She went into the bathroom and labored on the toilet, in case she had an accident. Daddy stood in front of her and rubbed her back until each contraction passed; it felt so good to Mommy. She went back to the bedroom to see if she could resume the side relaxation position, but she couldn’t get comfortable.

Daddy then suggested that she take a shower; and it was there that it dawned on her. She was finally able to use the bathroom but got absolutely no relief. In fact, she thought to herself, “Perhaps I need to tuck my chin,” and she suddenly realized that she was trying to push the baby out. She told Daddy to call Miss Deb and that they needed to leave immediately.

All her plans for delivery day were gone. She did not make brownies for the nurses. She did not fix her hair. She did not put in her contact lenses. She did not finish packing. They got into the car and began the trip to the hospital. Thank goodness we were only a few minutes away! Daddy was speeding, of course, and all Mommy could do was yell at him to slow down. She was trying not to push in the car, but it was so difficult.

They pulled into the emergency room parking lot at 5:15 a.m., only 4 hours after beginning labor. Daddy was sure that Mommy was barely dilated and that we would be sent home, so he left the camera and all our personal items in the car with the exception of Mommy's pillow. Mommy sat down in the waiting area while Daddy spoke with the girl at the desk. As she had another contraction, the girl asked her if she could come over and sign some papers; she said no. The girl then offered to come over to Mommy. She slapped a signature and date on the form, and they were ready to go to the maternity ward. The girl told Mommy that she had to wait until they brought a wheelchair. She doesn’t really remember what happened next, but the girl said, “well, it’s procedure for you to be wheeled down there, but since you threatened me, I guess you can walk.”

The walk down the hallway from the emergency room to the women’s care center seemed never ending. She had two contractions as we went down the hall. She put her hands around Daddy's neck and pressed her back into the wall. A group of orderlies came by and asked if they could get her a wheelchair; She basically told them no and to go away.

When we finally made it to the maternity ward, the nurses were waiting to get her settled into the labor and delivery room. Daddy tried to explain to Barb, the nurse on duty, what her symptoms were as she went into the bathroom to have a contraction on the toilet. Barb asked if Mommy wanted to put on a robe or wear her own clothes, but they asked for an immediate cervical exam instead. Imagine their surprise when she told us that we were “complete.” Daddy looked at Mommy and said, “I guess I need to start making some phone calls.”

Barb called out, “I need a table and Dr. Pascuzzi!” Another nurse asked when we needed the doctor, and Barb yelled “NOW.” She asked if she could give Mommy an IV, but she asked for the hep lock instead. Then Barb positioned the external fetal monitor to get a reading on me. As soon as the hep lock and fetal monitor were in place, Barb told Mommy she could start pushing. However, she wanted to wait for Miss Deb and Dr. Pascuzzi to show up and fought the urge to push for a little longer.

Miss Deb and the doctor arrived around 5:40 a.m. Dr. Pascuzzi checked on me and then went to go get his coffee, and Mommy began pushing. Even though it felt so good to be finally able to push, she couldn’t remember what she was supposed to do. She forgot to grab her legs and had a tendency to raise her arms above her head; Daddy and Miss Deb kept reminding her to keep them down. Then, after having held her breath through the pushing contractions, she breathed too rapidly afterwards and was given an oxygen mask. Miss Deb asked if Mommy wanted to change positions, but she did not want to get off her back.

When Dr. Pascuzzi came back, we had made some progress, but my heart rate was not recovering quick enough after contractions. It was holding in the 80s. Mommy heard Dr. Pascuzzi say, “there comes a time when I will choose to intervene, and the time is coming soon.” Thinking that he was talking about a c-section, she put pushing into overdrive, pushing beyond what she thought possible.

Even though Mommy and Daddy had hoped to avoid an episiotomy, Dr. Pascuzzi told Mommy that if he made two snips, I would come out the next push. Mommy remembers mumbling for him not to make promises in case it wasn’t really the next push. He used some local anesthetic before making the cut. In the background, Mommy heard Dr. Pascuzzi explain that after the head was out, Miss Deb and Daddy would need to move aside so that the nurses could push me out; and before I knew it, that’s what happened. Mommy pushed, she felt warmth as my head passed through, she had some realization that the nurses were on either side of her pushing, and then I was out and placed on her chest at 6:10 a.m.

They began administering pitocin through Mommy's hep lock to help start uterine contractions and stop bleeding. Since I had made it through medication free, Mommy felt it was okay to have drugs now.

Daddy cut my umbilical cord, and Mommy looked down at the most beautiful baby Mommy had ever seen. We had no camera in the delivery room, so someone went to go get Memaw to take some pictures. Meanwhile, the nurse put the drops in my eyes, gave me a vitamin shot, and took my temperature. I took all of this extremely well until it was time to get my footprints, and then I screamed my head off.

After only a few minutes, Dr. Pascuzzi told Mommy to give one more push, and the placenta was delivered. Happily, she never saw it at all.

It seemed like forever and yet just a few minutes when they came to take me away to the nursery. Daddy went to watch over me during all the newborn procedures; and Miss Deb sat with Mommy as she marveled in the wonder that was our 5 hour birth. Mommy finally had the time to fill out the hospital paperwork that she normally would have completed beforehand; and she was very anxious to see me again. As soon as she was able, she got up and walked to the bathroom with the aid of the nurse. After successfully going to the bathroom on her own, she asked to be moved into her recovery room, which they had not even had time to prepare. Like a champion, she refused the wheelchair and walked to our room where my entire family was waiting to welcome us!
